What Is the Pokemon Base Set?

The Base Set was the first Pokemon TCG expansion released in the United States. It contains 102 cards, including iconic holofoil Rares like Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur. The set also introduced the shadowless and 1st Edition variants, which are the most valuable versions of these cards today.

Base Set Card Versions: Shadowless vs. Unlimited

Not all Base Set cards are equal. Here's a quick breakdown of the three main print runs:

• 1st Edition – The rarest version. Identified by the "Edition 1" stamp on the card's left side. 1st Edition holos are worth significantly more than other print runs.
• Shadowless – Printed shortly after 1st Edition without the shadow effect around the card image. Still highly collectible and more affordable than 1st Ed. Easiest way to tell the difference in these cards is actually based on the years on the bottom. Shadowless cards will have 4 years in order while the normal base set cards only have 3. 
• Unlimited (Shadowed) – The most common print run, featuring a drop shadow around the artwork box. Still great cards, just more widely available.

• Graded vs. Raw – Graded cards (PSA, BGS, CGC) are authenticated and slabbed for protection. Raw cards can be more affordable but carry more risk.
